Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatments get a bad rep in the dental world, but wrongly so. If your dentist tells you that you need it – don’t panic. It’s not a painful experience. It’s actually going to be the opposite – relieve your pain.

Root canal therapy is needed when the pulp in a tooth becomes inflamed and infected from a buildup of bacteria. You’ll know something is wrong because of the pain and discomfort in your teeth, but no worries – that’s what we are here for.

Root canal therapy involves stripping out the infected pulp from the tooth and cleaning it thoroughly. It is generally something that can be done in a single session, although in some complex cases we might have to extend it over two sessions just to keep you comfortable. A session usually lasts around 40 minutes but might stretch to a couple of hours. Certainly never longer than that, so it’s not a treatment that will disrupt your busy schedule.

We’ll need to take a few x-rays so our dentists can see exactly what they are dealing with in the root canal, but all of this can be done onsite here at Ocean Dental.

Once the tooth has been cleaned and the infected material removed, we’ll insert a filling to keep its structure. We might even recommend finishing off the treatment with a course of whitening or a veneer to hide any discolouration of defects. But generally you won’t even be able to tell that anything has been worked on – you can go back to your daily life with a set of seamless, comfortable teeth.

After the local anaesthetic has worn off you might feel a little sensitivity, but don’t worry. In just a few short days that’ll be gone and you will feel back to normal.

The ultimate aim of root canal therapy is to save a tooth and restore its structure, relieving pain so that you can go back to your daily life without any worries.

Root canal therapy changes lives. Don’t shy away from it – just a couple of sessions and a few short hours with you dentist and you will feel like a new person. We guarantee it.
